Digital audio WAV files contain metadata or information about the audio file in areas of the file known as "chunks". Chunks are groups of data that contain attributes important to reading audio files. A WAV files must contain at least two chunks; the format chunk that specifies the bit depth, number of channels, sample rate and other ancillary data for the audio file and the data chunk, which includes all of the sound data for the file.
Other chunk formats such as the European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) Broadcast Extension Chunk ("bext") and the Audio Engineering Society's (AES) CartChunk extensions include an expanded collection of descriptive fields and include attributes that are specifically relevant to audio used for broadcast.
AES Standard AES46-2002, The CartChunk standard allows users to embed common labeling information directly into a WAVE file. Based on the RIFF file format, the CartChunk format is a non-proprietary standard that allows additional metadata to be attached as an integral part of a WAVE file in the form of "chunks", or integral units of data.
This download contains several utility applications that allow for the viewing and in some cases editing of metadata chunk information in digital audio WAV files. Included in this download is WaveView from CartChunk.Org. WaveView is a Win9x-based generalized WAVE file viewer utility. Use WaveView to view the contents of important chunks in WAVE files. In addition to the contents of CartChunks, WaveView will interpret and display the EBU 'bext' and 'mext' chunks, along with the standard fmt and fact chunks (when present). You can use WaveView as an informal means of verifying that the contents of these chunks are correct.
CartChunk Editor is a Win-based WAVE file viewer and editor utility. CartChunk Editor can be used to view and edit the contents of chunks in WAVE files. In addition to the contents of CartChunks, CartChunk Editor will display and allow editing of the EBU 'bext' and 'mext' chunks.
